6 October 2026 · Batahelayaya, Wellawaya

Landslide Evacuation Drill — Batahelayaya

Ahead of the north-east monsoon, residents of a village struck by a falling boulder in 2011 practised a full evacuation: reading rain gauges for early warning signs, packing grab bags with documents and medical records, registering at the community-hall safe centre and responding to sirens. Held under the District Secretary's supervision with the Disaster Management Centre, Divisional Secretariat, Wellawaya Police and Army, it closed with a shared meal cooked from dry rations. The message: save your life first — everything else can be regained.
